PRESS RELEASE

MAY 18, 2005

11 AM at iHuman Youth Society

In March of 1996, when Christopher Ducharme was just 14, his life was changed forever. His mother was murdered. Patricia Grace Ducharme was killed by her boyfriend. Young Christopher was devastated. He fought his way through his depression with endless hours on his rollerblades. When his feet were not in motion, his mind was, creating poetry to try to come to terms with his loss.

While Christopher attended Concordia University College of Alberta, he made another huge step in his healing. He found a way to forgive his mother's killer, visiting the man in jail. Back at Concordia, he shared that experience, and his classmates began to see this exceptional young man with new eyes. In 2002, Chris was elected to Student Council as Vice-President External. He proceeded to make a difference in other people's lives, planning several highly successful special events, one of which was the Head Shave for the Michael Cuccione Foundation. In 2003 he was voted Student of the Year for Concordia.

Chris is fiercely determined to turn his tragedy into something positive for others, in memory of his mother. And so he conceived the project A Blade to Consider - a rollerblading marathon aimed at raising money for agencies dedicated to helping young people.

On July 23rd, one hundred hardy volunteers will strap on their rollerblades in Edmonton and skate to Leduc and back. The goal is to raise at least $100,000 through pledges for the skaters, as well as corporate and private donations. The money raised will be divided equally between Michael Cuccione Cancer Foundation and iHuman Youth Society, agencies whose work benefits youth facing their own unique challenges

Chris wants to make it clear he's not working alone. His vision has inspired a dedicated committee of eighteen and garnered the support of several corporations already, such as Concordia University College of Alberta, The Sutton Place Hotel, CBC, AVW Telav Audio Visual Solutions, PageMaster Publication Services, Inc., The Rotary Club of Northeast Edmonton and Emery Jamieson law firm.

Please join us for our kick off of A Blade to Consider, on May 18, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at iHuman Youth Society, 10515 - 101 Street. Please park in the back of the building, entering through the CN employee's parking lot. It is the building with the beautiful graffiti on it.
